Series background & context
The One of Us series follows a group of teens from the fictional Bayview, California, where a single afternoon in detention turns into a years long tangle of secrets, copycats, and dangerous games. Each book layers a new mystery on top of the fallout from that first crime.
In One of Us Is Lying, five students walk into detention and only four walk out alive. Simon, the creator of a notorious gossip app called About That, dies after a sudden allergic reaction, and the classmates who were with him become instant suspects. As Bronwyn, Addy, Cooper, and Nate try to clear their names, Simon's queued up posts threaten to expose their private mistakes to the whole school.
The investigation plays out against lockers, football games, and family dinners, but the tone stays tense and intimate. Rumors move faster than facts, the media circles Bayview High, and the four are forced to decide who they can actually trust when everyone has something to lose.
One of Us Is Next picks up about a year later, shifting the focus to Bronwyn's sister Maeve and classmates Phoebe and Knox. A mysterious texter starts a school wide game of truth or dare, daring students to take risky challenges or have their secrets broadcast for them. What starts as a cruel update of Simon's app quickly turns deadly, tying this new game back to what really happened in that original detention.
In One of Us Is Back, the wider Bayview Crew is home for the summer and trying to move on. An ominous billboard announces that it is time for a new game, and when one of their friends disappears, it is clear someone is still obsessed with Simon's legacy. Old enemies, unburied grudges, and fresh threats pull characters from all three books into the same high stakes puzzle.
Across the trilogy, the series blends whodunit plotting with high school drama, romance, and questions about justice. Expect rotating points of view, lots of red herrings, and a tight sense of continuity, so it is best read in order starting with One of Us Is Lying.
