Once Upon a Short Story is A.G. Marshall's playground for fairy tale experiments. Instead of long, connected novels, this series offers compact standalones that take one familiar setup and twist it just enough to feel fresh. The hook is simple: what if the story you thought you knew had a different center, a stranger problem, or a heroine who made bolder choices?

That short length matters. Marshall has to get in fast, set the problem clearly, and make the emotional turn count. So these stories tend to open with a sharp question or a looming deadline: a girl needs shelter, a princess needs a clue, a cursed woman is racing the clock, or a young woman with dangerous magic is trying to keep her life from turning into someone else's prize.

The cast changes from book to book, but the pattern is easy to recognize. The Grandmother with Enormous Eyes plays with Little Red Riding Hood through Matilda Brown and her granddaughter Red. A Gown of Spider Silk turns Cinderella into a bargain with a spider. The Bruised Princess reworks the pea test around Rachel, who arrives at a castle looking for safety, not status. In The Dwarf Ring, Snow White becomes the sort of girl who starts asking hard questions when women begin disappearing.

Other entries widen the field even more. The Curse of Gold follows Emily, whose magic literally creates gold and attracts exactly the wrong sort of attention. Even when Marshall is drawing from stories readers know well, she tends to shift power back toward the woman at the center.

They are quick reads, but they do not feel flimsy.

The tone is usually light on its feet, with a mix of romance, humor, danger, and one clever complication that changes the whole shape of the tale. The settings move from cottages and forests to courts, towers, and magical kingdoms, but the real appeal is watching Marshall find the pressure point in each old story. She likes asking what happens after the tidy version falls apart.

That makes the series very easy to dip into. There is no big ongoing plot to memorize, and most readers can start with whichever fairy tale catches their eye. Read in order, though, and you get a fuller sense of what Marshall enjoys as a writer: active heroines, unusual magical bargains, and endings that still feel like fairy tales, even when the road there gets messy.
