Olive Kitteridge

by Elizabeth Strout

2008

A collection of thirteen narratives centered on a blunt, formidable schoolteacher in a small coastal town. Through the lens of her neighbors and family, the book builds a complex portrait of a woman who is quick to judge but also capable of profound, if quiet, understanding.

Series background & context

The series is anchored in the fictional, salt-sprayed town of Crosby, Maine. It is a landscape of gray waters and small-town gossip, where everyone seems to know everyone else’s business. Standing firmly in the center of this world is Olive Kitteridge. She is a retired math teacher, a woman of significant physical size, and an even larger personality. She is not the kind of character who tries to win you over. She is abrasive, stubbornly opinionated, and famously intolerant of what she perceives as stupidity.

Olive operates with a ruthless sort of logic. She cuts through the social pleasantries that she finds unnecessary, often leaving hurt feelings in her wake. To her neighbors and former students, she can be terrifying. However, Elizabeth Strout ensures that we see what the townspeople often miss. Beneath that thick, defensive shell, Olive carries a heavy burden of sorrow. She is haunted by her father’s history and terrified of the vulnerability that comes with loving people.

The books are constructed in a unique way.

Instead of a straight line, the narrative is built from linked short stories. In some chapters, we are deep inside Olive’s head, experiencing her frustrations with her kind-hearted husband, Henry, or her strained relationship with her son, Christopher. In other stories, the focus shifts entirely to a former student or a neighbor in crisis. In these moments, Olive might only appear briefly—passing by in a car or offering a single, sharp comment at a picnic.

She is the thread that stitches the community together.

Time moves forward relentlessly in this series. The narrative spans decades, tracking the slow, inevitable changes in Crosby and in Olive herself. We watch her navigate the confusing territory of widowhood and the physical indignities of getting older. The sequel, Olive, Again, picks up these threads later in life, exploring new connections and the strange realization that people can still surprise themselves, even in their seventies and eighties.

The writing is quiet but hits hard. It explores the "unrecorded lives" of ordinary people, showing how much drama exists behind the closed doors of a quiet street. There is plenty of darkness here, including depression, betrayal, and loneliness. Yet, the series is never without hope.

By sticking with this difficult, prickly woman, the books reveal a profound truth about the human condition. We see that a person can be deeply flawed, difficult to love, and yet entirely worthy of being known. Olive creates a space where judgment and empathy exist side by side.
