Author bio
Michael Richan was born in California and grew up in California and Utah. He now lives in Washington State, and Seattle appears in older public author notes connected to his books. Those western settings matter in his fiction too. Again and again, he returns to damp Northwest woods, remote coastal towns, desert test zones, old mansions, and places that feel just cut off enough for something awful to take root.
He has been writing horror for more than forty years.
Richan has said he first wrote horror fiction as a young adult, then kept at it for years before publication finally caught up with the work. His first published novel, The Bank of the River, arrived in 2013. It was followed quickly by A Haunting in Oregon and Ghosts of Our Fathers, which helped establish the shape of the world he would keep building, a supernatural landscape where certain people can step into a hidden current called the River and see what most people cannot.
A lot of Richan's fiction lives inside that shared universe, but the books do not all feel the same. The River centers on Steven and his father Roy, a skeptical son and a gifted father who end up facing hauntings together. The Downwinders shifts south and east into the fallout zones of the desert Southwest, where radiation has twisted the supernatural ecosystem into something even stranger. The Dark River goes darker still, following an ex-cop named Derick into a place most sane people would avoid.
He's a builder of worlds, but he likes starting with a problem inside a house.
That shows up clearly in books like The Haunting of Pitmon House, The Coldwater Haunting, The Seances, I Reside Here, and the Mausoleum novels. Readers who click with Richan usually get a mix of haunted-house suspense, mystery plotting, and recurring characters who have to investigate the supernatural instead of just running from it. Even when the threat is huge, the stories stay close to the people caught inside it, what they fear, what they hide, and how much they are willing to risk for family or friends.
That family angle matters.
Parents and children, mentors and apprentices, found families, damaged households, and houses full of history all show up again and again in his work. So do practical details. His characters do not float through abstract nightmares. They drive out to remote properties, dig through journals, argue about what a clue means, and keep going because nobody else is going to fix the problem.
Richan has also shared a simple picture of his working life: coffee first, then writing in the morning and into the afternoon. He has pointed to Stephen King and Peter Straub as early influences, and later named writers like Kurt Vonnegut, Philip K. Dick, and Kazuo Ishiguro among his favorites. That mix helps explain the feel of his books. They are horror novels, yes, but they also like ideas, odd systems, and the way private grief can open the door to something much worse.
These days, the public information on him is still fairly spare, which somehow fits the books. What is easy to see is the consistency. He has kept expanding his universe, kept returning to haunted places with rules of their own, and kept writing stories for readers who want ghost fiction with strong mystery bones and a lot of momentum.
