They Rend
by Orlando A Sanchez
2021
Nyx gains terrifying new power, but she barely understands it before Acheron is taken. To save her demon companion, she must survive brutal training and become scarier than the monsters she hunts.
Series background & context
Nyxia White is not entirely human, and that matters from the start. She can see what others cannot, works with dark magic, and ends up tied to The Seven, a group tasked with protecting humanity from what hunts in the dark. That gives the series a strong hunter-against-monster shape right away.
But the books do not stop there. Nyxia's demon familiar, Acheron, is central to the series, and the later books show how personal the stakes become when he is threatened. Training, transformation, and the fear of becoming monstrous all move into the foreground.
So this is not only a monster-hunting series.
It is also about power that changes the person using it. Nyx has to fight, but she also has to learn what she is willing to become in order to protect the few beings she trusts. That makes the action feel more personal than procedural.
If you like urban fantasy with a dark heroine, a demon companion, and a steady push toward larger supernatural conflict, Nyxia White is a strong fit. It has the pace of Sanchez's other series, but a more gothic, personal edge.
