Series background & context
This series follows Ava James, a fire mystic working inside the Mystic Investigative Division. That gives the books a strong investigative spine, but from inside a magical institution rather than outside it. Ava is not just chasing clues. She is also moving through the politics, suspicion, and power structures of a world that fears and uses mystics at the same time.
A Dream of Ashes sets the tone well. A dead mystic is found, the clues point toward one of Ava's own, and the case quickly turns personal. That is the kind of pressure Sanchez handles well. His protagonists rarely get to stand outside the system. They are usually trapped somewhere inside it, trying to do the job before the system crushes them.
Ava fits that pattern.
The series feels a little tougher and more internal than some of his lighter urban fantasy work. There is still action, but there is also a bigger emphasis on accusation, secrecy, and the fear that the person investigating may become the next target. The magical world here is organized, hierarchical, and clearly dangerous.
Readers who like mystery structure inside a larger fantasy setting should find a lot to like here. It is still fast moving, but the hook is not only the danger in the street. It is also the danger inside the institution tasked with dealing with it.
