Author bio

ND Stevenson grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, in a large religious family where stories, art and cartoons quickly became a way to make sense of the world. After being homeschooled, he attended A.C. Flora High School and later moved to Baltimore to study at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he dove into comics, illustration and character design. (en.wikipedia.org)

In college he began posting fan art and original characters online under the handle “gingerhaze,” including a joking “hipster Lord of the Rings” series that unexpectedly took off and brought a big audience to his work. (en.wikipedia.org)

One of those school assignments turned into the character who would change his career: Nimona. What started as a webcomic soon grew into the science-fantasy graphic novel Nimona, following a chaotic shapeshifter who teams up with a disgraced knight to expose a corrupt institution. The book won a Cartoonist Studio Prize and an Eisner Award, hit the bestseller lists and was later adapted into an animated film, cementing Stevenson as a major voice in comics at a very young age. (en.wikipedia.org)

Around the same time, he co-created and co-wrote Lumberjanes, the camp-set series about five friends at Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet's Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types. The comic blends supernatural mystery with goofy badge challenges and heartfelt, queer-inclusive friendships, and it ran for 75 issues plus specials, picking up multiple Eisner Awards and a passionate all-ages readership along the way. (en.wikipedia.org)

Stevenson’s work in comics led him into animation. He did freelance writing and design before becoming creator and showrunner of She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, a reimagining of the 1980s series that ran from 2018 to 2020. As showrunner, he helped shape the story’s focus on found family, complex villains and openly queer characters, work that gained both industry awards and a devoted fanbase. (en.wikipedia.org)

Alongside the big fantasy projects, he turned inward with The Fire Never Goes Out, an illustrated memoir collecting eight years of comics and essays about ambition, faith, burnout, queerness and mental health. The book traces how early success, tight deadlines and online attention collided with his private life, and how getting help and slowing down became part of his creative survival. (burningbooks.com)

Stevenson has written candidly about being transmasculine and bigender, about top surgery and about growing up in a strict evangelical environment and later leaving that faith. Today he uses he/him pronouns and keeps “ND Stevenson” as his professional name, continuing to fold questions of identity and self-acceptance into his fiction and personal work alike. (en.wikipedia.org)

In recent years he has launched a personal comics newsletter, contributed to various animation and comics projects and returned to prose with Scarlet Morning, a middle-grade pirate fantasy he first drafted as a teenager and later rewrote during pandemic-era burnout. Following two orphans who join a legendary crew to save a broken world, the duology marks his move into heavily illustrated novels while keeping the mix of adventure, humor and emotional honesty that runs through all of his work.
