Author bio

NJ Moss is a thriller writer from Weston-super-Mare, England, and he still lives there today. His books sit firmly in the psychological suspense lane, full of obsession, deception, and the slow dread of everyday life turning strange.

Before publishing under his own name, Moss studied English literature and spent about a decade working as a fiction ghostwriter. That work paid the rent, but it also gave him a practical education in deadlines, structure, and how to keep a story moving when readers expect a twist around every corner.

He has said that his first ghostwriting jobs came through freelance listings, and that he ended up writing romance fiction for hire, often at speed. Early on he did not even have a laptop or a desk, so he wrote in short library sessions and learned to make every hour count.

A lot of writers talk about wanting to write. Moss had already done the writing part.

The harder problem was finishing something that belonged to him. In an essay about his path to publication, he said that from ages eighteen to twenty-seven he started and abandoned around twenty books of his own, even while producing millions of words for other people. He later estimated that his ghostwriting total had passed four million words.

What changed was All Your Fault. Published in 2021, it became his first completed novel under his own name, a domestic thriller about a mother whose return to work opens the door to paranoia and an old family tragedy. Moss has written that finishing the book mattered as much as publishing it, because it broke a pattern he had been stuck in for years.

He followed it with Her Final Victim, My Dead Husband, The Husband Trap, and The Second Wife. They are standalones, but they share a taste for tight, high-pressure setups: marriages under strain, people trapped by their past, and narrators who are never completely sure who they can trust, including themselves.

His books go dark, and they get there fast.

My Dead Husband begins with the news that a woman's abusive husband is dead, only to turn that apparent ending into a fresh nightmare. The Husband Trap takes a proposal night and flips it into a kidnapping story. The Second Wife starts with remarriage and moves straight into blackmail and control. Even when the premises change, Moss keeps returning to the same pressure points, love curdling into obsession, home becoming a trap, and reality feeling less stable by the page.

That familiar-then-wrong pattern is a big part of what defines his work. A school run, a new job, a marriage, a home, these are often his starting points. Then he applies pressure until the ordinary feels unsafe. Away from the page, he sounds fairly grounded. He lives with his wife and their dogs, Loki and Gizmo, and he has mentioned reading, walking them, and inline skating along the Weston-super-Mare promenade when he is not writing.
