Author bio
Helen Moss writes children's books that mix clues, danger, humor, and a strong sense of place. A lot of them feature ordinary young detectives. Quite a few also feature very good dogs.
Born in 1964, she grew up in Worcestershire, with part of her childhood also shaped by time in Saudi Arabia. That mix of countryside freedom and faraway places fits her work well, because her books often feel rooted in real landscapes while still leaving room for mystery and adventure.
Before she was a novelist, Moss spent years in a very different world. She studied psychology and philosophy, then went on to a PhD in psycholinguistics at the University of Cambridge. After that she worked as a research scientist and lecturer, studying how the brain processes language and meaning. It is not the usual route into children's fiction, but it helps explain why her stories are so interested in puzzles, patterns, and the way people think.
Writing came later.
A family year in Oregon gave her space to step back and think about what she wanted next. When she returned to Cambridge, she took a creative writing course and found herself pulled hard toward fiction for younger readers. She has described herself as a late starter, but once she began, she quickly found the kind of stories she wanted to tell: mysteries with pace, humor, teamwork, and just enough peril to keep readers turning pages.
Many readers first meet her through The Mystery of the Whistling Caves, the opening Adventure Island book. That series follows Scott, Jack, Emily, and Drift the dog on Castle Key, a fictional island off the Cornish coast, and it is easy to see why the books stuck. They have hidden rooms, missing people, old legends, and cliffhanger endings, but they also trust young readers to follow clues and think things through for themselves. Later titles like The Mystery of the Hidden Gold and The Mystery of the Invisible Spy keep that same brisk, holiday-mystery energy.
Then she widened the map.
In The Phoenix Code, the first Secrets of the Tombs novel, Moss moves into a bigger canvas, taking Ryan and Cleo to Egypt and building a story around archaeology, coded messages, ancient history, and modern danger. The Dragon Path and The Serpent King carry that approach into China and Mexico, giving readers real historical settings without slowing down the adventure. If you like mysteries that come with tombs, ruins, and the feeling that the past is still pushing on the present, these are the books to reach for.
Dogs, though, are never far away in her work. After writing Drift in Adventure Island, Moss leaned all the way into that love with the Time Dogs books, where a pack of senior dogs are sent back into the past and turned into puppies again. In Balto and the Race Against Time and Barry and the Great Mountain Rescue, she uses real history as the base and lets canine teamwork do the rest. More recently, Balto and Togo: Hero Dogs of Alaska retells the famous serum run in a fuller, more historical way.
She has also written shorter work, including stories for the Reading Planet line and a contribution to the anthology Mystery and Mayhem. Across all of it, some things keep returning: young people noticing what adults miss, codes and secrets hidden in plain sight, vivid settings, and the idea that courage usually looks a lot like keeping going when you are scared.
Moss now lives near Cambridge with her computer-scientist husband, and she has two grown-up sons. She regularly visits schools, leads workshops, and talks to children about stories and reading. Away from the desk, she enjoys long walks in the countryside, sewing, reading, playing netball, and, when she gets the chance, climbing mountains or skiing down them. All of that feels of a piece with the books: curious, energetic, and happiest when there is something to explore.
