Nina Varela Books in Order

Nina Varela was born in New Orleans and raised in Durham, North Carolina. Much of her childhood was spent outdoors, playing in the woods and around the Eno River. That early closeness to untamed places still shows up in her fiction, where forests, magic, old stories, and uneasy borders often matter as much as a map.

Her route to novels ran through screenplays and short fiction. Varela has said that studying screenwriting helped her understand the bare bones of a story, the structure underneath character, setting, and emotion. It is a useful skill for books that carry a lot of moving parts without losing sight of the people at the center.

Her first novel, Crier's War, introduced readers to a future-fantasy world where the Automae have overthrown humanity. The book follows Crier, the designed daughter of a ruler, and Ayla, a human servant who enters Crier's household with revenge on her mind. Their growing connection has to survive a system built on violence, hierarchy, and fear.

Varela has described the starting point as an interest in a supposedly cold, emotionless character discovering that she feels deeply. Crier and Ayla were built as opposites: one trained to contain herself, the other full of anger and purpose. The story lets both of them change without pretending that change is simple.

Iron Heart completes the Crier's War duology. It widens the story beyond the palace as rebellion gathers force, while Crier and Ayla must decide what they owe each other and what kind of future their divided world might allow. The books mix romance, political tension, questions of personhood, and the hard work of choosing a side.

With Juniper Harvey and the Vanishing Kingdom, Varela moved into middle-grade fantasy. Juniper is an eleven-year-old adjusting to a move to rural Florida when a girl from her dreams appears in her room with a sword and a problem from another world. The book brings mythology, monsters, friendship, and a first crush into a fast-moving adventure.

Across these stories, Varela returns to queer young people finding room to be themselves. Her characters may face magical threats or powerful regimes, but they also deal with trust, grief, loyalty, and the strange relief of being understood by someone else. She writes fantasy that gives those everyday feelings a larger stage.

Varela lives in Los Angeles with a small dog. Her author bio also mentions baking, cooking, and an impatience around freshly baked sourdough, which feels like a fitting detail for a writer whose books make space for danger, tenderness, and small comforts.
