Series background & context

The NightShade Forensic Files mix FBI procedure, supernatural suspense, and a long-form team story. At the center are Eleri Eames and Donovan Heath, who first collide in Under Dark Skies when both of them think their old careers are basically over. Eleri is getting a second chance after a disastrous case. Donovan is a gifted medical examiner whose unusual abilities make ordinary life harder and harder to hide.

NightShade is the secret division that wants people like them. Its job is to handle the cases regular agencies cannot explain cleanly, or do not even want to admit exist. That setup gives the series a strong case-by-case rhythm, but the books are not simple standalones. Each investigation also feeds a larger story about the unit itself, the people inside it, and the dangerous things moving around the edges of the Bureau.

The cases cover a lot of ground. Fracture Five drops Eleri and Donovan into a knot of terror cells and national security fear. The Atlas Defect begins with a missing skeleton and only gets stranger from there. Echo and Ember adds arson, team politics, and a reshuffled field unit. Later books move through New Orleans family ghosts in Garden of Bone, a genius town murder puzzle in The Camelot Gambit, a research vessel nightmare in Dead Tide, a brutal Florida serial case in Vanishing Point, and an old heist mystery in Beneath Memory.

The settings matter as much as the cases. A cult compound, Los Angeles, old New Orleans, open water, the Everglades, and a town built for brilliant people all give the series a moody, almost season-by-season feel. Scudiere's forensic background helps too. Evidence, body work, and lab reasoning are not there just for color. They are part of how the books think.

The cases are weird. The emotions are real.

Over time the world widens beyond Eleri and Donovan to include Walter, GJ, Christina, Wade, and other agents whose loyalties and talents matter more with every book. Found family becomes a big part of the appeal. So does the longer arc about hidden programs, buried histories, internal betrayals, and forces that no one in power fully controls. The supernatural pieces matter, but the series stays grounded because the characters keep asking practical questions even when the answer sounds impossible.

If you want a series that starts as paranormal FBI investigation and grows into a bigger team saga, this one is easy to sink into. Read it in order. The relationships, secrets, and institutional cracks all build from book to book.
