Series background & context
The Nightfall Saga returns to the Demon Cycle world roughly fifteen years after the war that seemed to end demonkind. The great heroes of the last series are now parents and legends, and their children have grown up in a world that thinks the worst is over.
Olive Paper, princess of Hollow, has had her life mapped out since birth by her mother, Duchess Leesha Paper. She is heir to both a powerful duchy and the desert bloodline of Ahmann Jardir, and everyone around her has strong ideas about how a future ruler should look, act, and even fight.
Darin Bales, son of Arlen and Renna, carries a very different burden. Gifted with supernatural senses that can easily overwhelm him, he struggles with anxiety and other people’s low expectations. To most of the world he looks fragile, but he knows better than anyone how dangerous the night used to be.
When the demon corelings return—stronger, smarter, and led by the Demon King Alagai Ka—the fragile peace breaks. Reports say the Spear of Ala, a fortress guarding the way into the demons’ hive, may already have fallen, and Olive is expected to step into command because of the blood in her veins.
At the same time, Darin finds himself drawn into a rescue mission when his mother is captured, forcing him off safe roads and back into the kind of danger his parents hoped he would never see. What begins as an attempt to save one person quickly grows into a campaign that will shape the whole continent.
Across the series, Brett uses this new generation to explore legacy, identity, and the weight of prophecy. The tone is still dark and action‑driven—there are sieges, demon nests, and desperate battles—but much of the tension comes from Olive and Darin trying to claim their own lives while the world keeps insisting they repeat their parents’ stories.
Readers who know the Demon Cycle will recognize familiar places and faces, but the Nightfall Saga is designed as its own entry point, blending fresh perspectives with the lingering shadow of an unfinished war.
