Author bio
Nicole Jordan was born in Oklahoma in 1954 and grew up moving often because her father was in the U.S. Army. By the time she finished high school in Germany, she already knew how to adjust fast, make a home anywhere, and watch how different places shape people. That restless, wide-angle start shows up later in how often her fiction travels.
Books came early.
Jordan has said her mother read Pride and Prejudice and The Scarlet Pimpernel aloud to her when she was about ten. She has often pointed to those early read-aloud sessions as the start of her love for romance. Before long she was reading Mary Stewart and Victoria Holt on her own, which helps explain why so many of her novels mix love stories with suspense, secrets, or a little adventure.
She did not start out expecting a writing career. Jordan earned a civil engineering degree from Georgia Tech, then spent eight years working as a manufacturing manager for Procter & Gamble, helping make products like disposable diapers and toilet tissue. It is one of those biography details people tend to remember, partly because it feels so far from ballrooms, dukes, and stolen kisses.
Then came the pivot.
After reading Laurie McBain's Tears of Gold and attending a goal-setting workshop built around the idea of not waiting too long to chase a dream, she went home and started writing one of her own stories in longhand. It still was not quick. After four years of part-time writing, revising, and getting turned down, she sold her first story in 1985. That beginning feels practical and stubborn in the best way.
More than thirty historical romances later, Jordan has built a big backlist across several favorite settings. She writes Regency romances most often, but she has also gone to the Scottish Highlands, the American West, the medieval world, and the desert. Her books are romantic first, yet they usually have some extra pressure around the edges, family loyalties, danger, old betrayals, social rules, or the simple fact that two very proud people are trying not to give in.
Many readers meet her through the Notorious books, including The Seduction, The Passion, and The Prince of Pleasure, where rakes, spies, and adventurers run into women who can match them. Others start with the witty Courtship Wars novels, beginning with To Pleasure a Lady, or with the fairy-tale-minded Legendary Lovers series, which opens with Princess Charming. If you want more overt adventure, Master of Temptation and the other Paradise novels bring in a secret society and Mediterranean intrigue. If you want western romance, The Outlaw shows another side of her work.
She likes big feeling, but she also likes momentum.
That combination helped make her a steady bestseller. Her novels have appeared on major bestseller lists, and over the years she has picked up honors that include RITA finalist status, the Dorothy Parker Award of Excellence, and a career achievement award for historical romance. One of her books, Touch Me with Fire, even had a comic pop-culture moment when Jay Leno used it in a Tonight Show skit.
A recent author bio says she has more than seven million books in print. Off the page, horses have clearly been part of her life for a long time. Older biographical notes mention an Irish Thoroughbred named Irish Outlaw, while a more recent one places her in Cincinnati with a beloved show horse, EZ. That feels fitting for a writer whose stories so often combine glamour, movement, and a competitive spark.
