Author bio

Nick Pirog grew up in Colorado with his nose in books and his head full of stories. He was born in Denver and spent his childhood between the city and the nearby mountains, long before he knew that those landscapes would end up in his fiction.

As a kid, reading novels like Matilda flipped a switch for him. He decided early that he wanted to write for a living, but he took a practical route first, studying business at Colorado State University. Through college he kept talking about being a writer more than actually doing the work.

That changed after he graduated in 2003. Living on a shoestring, he started treating writing like a second job, carving out about ten hours a week, often working from bed with a notebook and a laptop. Out of those short, consistent sessions came his debut thriller Unforeseen, written in his early twenties and eventually published in 2008. The book introduced homicide detective Thomas Prescott and quietly found a big digital audience.

The Thomas Prescott series has been a through line in his career. In Unforeseen, a retired Thomas is dragged back into the hunt for a serial killer the world believes is dead. Later books such as Gray Matter, The Afrikaans, Show Me, Jungle Up, and The Numbers send him from Seattle to Maine, from a hijacked cruise liner to a Missouri farm town and the Bolivian jungle. The books are full of high body counts and big conspiracies, but readers tend to come back for Thomas himself, with his bad timing, sharp eye for detail, and habit of cracking jokes when he should probably keep quiet.

Pirog’s other signature creation is Henry Bins, the man who is only awake for one hour a day. The 3 a.m. series, which begins with 3:00 A.M., takes that strange sleep disorder and uses it as the engine for lean, fast novellas. Henry hears a scream and sees the president slip out of his neighbor’s house, chases family secrets tied to an old espionage program, and even travels to Alaska so he can finally see the sun. Along the way he is joined by his cat Lassie, his dad, and a giant dog named Murdock, giving the thrillers an offbeat, domestic warmth.

With Maddy Young, Pirog leans into science fiction. In Dead on Arrival, Maddy dies on the eve of retaking the bar exam and wakes in a city called Two, where a portion of the dead get a second life. It starts as a darkly funny afterlife tour, then slowly tilts into a conspiracy thriller as Maddy questions who runs this world and why its rules feel so tightly controlled.

The Speed of Souls shows another side of his writing. The novel follows Jerry Ryman, a midlist science fiction author in a full blown midlife crisis, and Hugo, the dog who dies and comes back as a kitten determined to find his way home. It is part grief story, part road trip, and part animal comedy, and it has become a favorite entry point for readers who love pets as much as plot twists.

Across all of these books, Pirog keeps the prose clean and the focus on story. He has talked about learning from writers like Nelson DeMille, John Grisham, Michael Crichton, and Janet Evanovich, borrowing their sense of pacing, everyday detail, and humor. His chapters tend to end on small cliffhangers, his heroes cope with stress by cracking wise, and even the strangest premises are grounded in familiar emotions like fear, loyalty, and regret.

Today he is based in South Lake Tahoe, where he writes around a life shared with his partner Stephy and their dog, Potter. Faith is a quiet but steady part of how he talks about the work, and he still seems amused that stories drafted in bed and revised a few hours a week have reached so many readers. Whether he is sending Thomas Prescott back into danger, giving Henry Bins one more sleepless hour, or dreaming up a new idea entirely, he treats writing as equal parts puzzle, play, and gratitude.
