Unforeseen

by Nick Pirog

2008

Retired homicide detective Thomas Prescott wants nothing to do with the bestseller about his old serial killer case, until the supposedly dead murderer strikes again. As people close to him start dying, he must face his past and stop a killer who knows every move he makes.

Series background & context

Thomas Prescott is the kind of detective who cannot stop poking at trouble, even in retirement. A former Seattle homicide cop and FBI contract agent, he is smart, stubborn, and constantly cracking jokes in situations where most people would be speechless. The Thomas Prescott novels follow him from case to case as he keeps stumbling into conspiracies that are much bigger than he first thinks.

The series opens with Unforeseen, where Thomas is trying to move on from a notorious serial killer investigation. A bestselling true crime book about the case insists that the murderer, nicknamed the MAINEiac, is dead. Thomas knows better. When new killings begin on the anniversary of the original crimes, including someone from his past, he is dragged back into a hunt that is both personal and brutal.

In Gray Matter he returns to Seattle after nearly a decade away and almost immediately finds a body floating in the cove behind his childhood home. The victim is not just any woman, but the missing governor of Washington. Partnering, often uneasily, with detective Erica Frost, Thomas peels back a plot that reaches from the governor's mansion to the North Cascades and introduces a chilling new kind of killer.

The Afrikaans shifts the action to the high seas. A supposedly intimate luxury cruise turns into a siege when African pirates commandeer the ship and demand medical relief for a remote Zulu village. With hundreds of passengers trapped on board and World Health Organization doctor Gina Brady racing to the village itself, Thomas has to keep people alive long enough to figure out what the hijackers really want.

In Show Me, Thomas inherits a 250 acre farm in small town Missouri and thinks he might finally slow down. Instead he becomes obsessed with a four year old grocery store shooting that was written off as workplace revenge. His questions about who was really targeted lead him into the world of Big Biotech, corporate political money, and private security teams that do not mind silencing witnesses.

Jungle Up finds him chasing a desperate call from Gina into the Bolivian Amazon. Guided by a mercenary with questionable loyalties and entangled with an archaeological expedition searching for a lost city, Thomas faces cartels, hostile jungle tribes, and the rainforest itself. It is one of the series' most adventurous entries, full of shifting alliances and physical danger.

The Numbers works as a prequel and a jumping in point. Set in Philadelphia a few years before Unforeseen, it shows a younger Thomas consulting on the case of a serial killer who carves three digit numbers into his victims. At the same time he investigates the death of a protester from a wealthy family and a shadowy street lottery, tying the crimes together while juggling his sister Lacy's health scare.

Taken together, the Thomas Prescott books balance sharp, often self deprecating humor with genuine stakes. Thomas gets bruised, makes mistakes, and cares deeply about his family and the people he is trying to save. Each novel can stand on its own, but long time readers will recognize how relationships and consequences carry from one wild case to the next.
