Author bio

Nick Cook grew up in London in a family where art mattered. He studied fine art at college, then faced the familiar problem that follows many creative degrees: how to turn that interest into a living.

The answer, at least at first, was video games.

Cook entered the growing games business in the 1980s as a graphic artist. Over the years, he helped build games, create settings, and shape longer stories. He later set up two studios and worked on around forty published game titles, experience that gave him plenty of practice in building worlds people could step into.

But science fiction kept calling.

At the end of 2006, Cook left the games industry to focus on writing full time. His early science-fiction work included the Cloud Riders trilogy, which introduces ideas that later connect with his larger Multiverse Chronicles. The books ask big what-if questions, but they usually begin with something personal: a strange signal, a frightening storm, a lost friend, or an ordinary person pushed into a situation they cannot ignore.

That approach is clear in Fractured Light, where Jake Stevens and his former friend Chloe uncover a danger tied to dark-energy experiments and hidden powers. In Earth Song, radio-telescope worker Lauren Stelleck intercepts a message that changes her life and sends her searching for answers in Orkney. Inflection Point moves in another direction, following Nathan Bishop from the First World War into a time-travel story shaped by history, science, and the consequences of changing the past.

The series are connected, but each has its own doorway in. Cloud Riders is built around tornadoes, airships, and parallel Earths. Fractured Light leans into shadowy conspiracies and young people discovering unusual abilities. The seven-book Earth Song sequence expands from an alien signal and ancient mysteries into a much wider struggle. Readers who like their science fiction to keep widening the map will find plenty to follow.

Cook's recurring interests include astronomy, space exploration, archaeology, hidden technologies, and the uneasy gap between what humans know and what they are ready to handle. He likes stories in which discoveries come with a cost. The science is speculative, but the characters still have to deal with fear, loyalty, grief, and difficult choices.

He also writes crime fiction under the name J.R. Sinclair. It is a useful reminder that Cook's interest is not just in futuristic ideas, but in the engine of a good story: people under pressure, trying to work out who to trust.

Cook is based in Oxford, England. Away from the page, his interests include travel, astronomy, and looking at the world from the angle of one simple question: what if?
