Series background & context

New at Texas High follows Abi as she arrives in a new town during her senior year with more baggage than she wants anyone to see. After her parents are arrested for selling prescription painkillers, she moves in with her grandmother and tries to build a life that is not defined by what happened at home.

In Abi and the Boy Next Door, Abi wants a clean start. She wants friends, confidence, and a healthier way of dealing with stress. Jon, the popular and kind neighbor who offers her a seat on the bus, becomes an unexpected source of safety. But trusting someone new is hard when she expects people to judge her past.

A fresh start is never as tidy as it sounds.

The next books take Abi beyond the first rush of falling in love. Abi and the Boy Who Lied introduces an anonymous graduation card and a threat that makes her question who is watching her. Abi and the Boy She Loves follows Abi and Jon into a new stage of life, where old trauma, family consequences, and Jon's injury put pressure on both of them.

The romance is central, but Abi's relationship with herself matters just as much. She works on confidence, running, friendship, and the belief that she can build a future separate from the choices her parents made. Jon is supportive, yet he also has his own losses and uncertainty to face.

The Texas high school setting gives the story a familiar YA feel, with buses, games, graduation, close friends, and small-town gossip. At the same time, the series deals with heavier questions about addiction, recovery, trust, and what it means to heal without pretending the past never happened.

Read these books in order, beginning with Abi and the Boy Next Door. Abi's growth and the suspense around her family story carry directly from one book to the next.
