Nathan Active Mystery Books in Order

The Nathan Active mysteries are police procedurals set in the fictional Arctic village of Chukchi, Alaska. Nathan is an Alaska State Trooper at the start of the series, born in Chukchi to an Inupiat mother but adopted and raised by a white family in Anchorage. His posting back to the village puts him in a difficult position. He knows the region is part of his history, but he does not automatically feel at home there.

That tension gives the series its center. Nathan is both local and outsider, a cop expected to understand a community with long memories, close family networks, and its own ways of handling trouble. The weather, distance, and limited resources matter in every investigation. A lead may require a snowmachine trip, a bush flight, or patience with people who have good reasons not to trust official questions.

White Sky, Black Ice begins with two suspicious deaths and concern around a local copper mine. In Shaman Pass, Nathan investigates the killing of a tribal leader with an antique harpoon that has recently returned to Chukchi. Frozen Sun sends him searching across Alaska for Grace Palmer, a woman whose disappearance becomes more troubling the more he learns. Later cases involve a deadly fire, a governor who pulls Nathan into a political mess, a suspicious plane crash, and human remains found near an abandoned fish camp.

The cold is never just scenery.

Jones builds the mysteries around the daily workings of northern Alaska: flying, hunting, village politics, old grudges, work, money, and relationships that cannot be left behind at the end of a shift. The books also follow Nathan's changing personal life, especially his connection with Grace and the family he gradually builds. The tone is serious but not gloomy all the time. There is room for oddball characters, practical jokes, and the kind of humor people use when conditions are rough.

Nathan's job changes as the series goes on, but Chukchi remains the point of return. The later novels, The Big Empty and Ghost Light, were written with Patricia Watts and keep the focus on a detective whose home life and public responsibilities are tightly connected. Start with White Sky, Black Ice for Nathan's backstory and the fullest introduction to Chukchi. Reading in publication order works best, since relationships and career changes carry forward from one case to the next.
