Stan Jones Books in Order

Stan Jones was born in Anchorage, Alaska, but much of his childhood happened far away from the Arctic. When he was about two, his Tennessee-born parents returned to the South, and Jones spent his early years on a farm near the Tennessee-Mississippi border.

It was a hands-on childhood. He picked cotton, raised a heifer for the county fair, rode a plowhorse named Bob, and grew up in McNairy County, a place he remembers for its moonshiners and its determined sheriff.

At twelve, Jones moved back to Anchorage with his family. Apart from brief stretches away for college, Alaska has been home ever since. In his late twenties, after what he has called a fairly aimless period, he moved to Kotzebue, an Inupiat community in northwestern Alaska.

Kotzebue stayed with him.

Jones found the Arctic landscape, demanding weather, and local life deeply engaging. He drove snowmachines across the tundra, landed small planes on sea ice, hunted moose and caribou, and even helped paddle a sealskin umiaq while pursuing a bowhead whale. Those experiences gave him both an affection for the region and a sharp sense of its practical realities.

After Kotzebue, he lived in Anchorage and Fairbanks and worked as a newspaper journalist. His investigative reporting earned national awards, including for work that helped lead to impeachment proceedings against an Alaska governor. He also reported on the Exxon Valdez oil spill, an event he later explored in the oral history The Spill with Sharon Bushell.

The move from reporting to fiction grew naturally from his time in the north. Jones began the Nathan Active mysteries after leaving Kotzebue, using the town as a model for the fictional Arctic village of Chukchi. White Sky, Black Ice introduces Native state trooper Nathan Active, whose return to his birth community brings both a murder case and an uneasy reckoning with his own history.

In later books, including Shaman Pass, Frozen Sun, The Big Empty, and Ghost Light, Jones follows Active through crimes shaped by family ties, local politics, environmental pressures, and the challenges of life in a small, isolated community. Readers who enjoy the books often come for the investigations, then stay for the dry humor, the working details of Arctic travel, and the people around Nathan. Jones later took his mysteries in a different direction with The Sand Garden, written with Mary Wasche and set in Palm Springs.

Jones lives in Anchorage with his wife, Susan, an epidemiologist and karate master. They have two adult children. He remains a serious reader, especially of northern writing, and an enthusiastic amateur photographer.
