When Sally decides to publish a book about that summer, the novel moves between present-day Nantucket and 1969, when Cooper arrived on the island after Vietnam and met Sally under the lights of a dance.

That structure gives the series a slightly different feel from a straightforward beach read. These books are interested in parents and children, nephews and uncles, the stories families tell, and the ones they avoid because the truth still stings. Rossiter keeps the tone accessible and emotional, but there is real melancholy underneath it, especially around missed chances and the different forms love can take over a lifetime.
