Trudy Nan Boyce Books in Order

Trudy Nan Boyce came to crime fiction after a working life in Atlanta policing. Before she joined the City of Atlanta police force, she earned a Ph.D. in community counseling. Her novels put a police officer's day-to-day judgment at the center, not just the puzzle of who committed a crime.

During more than thirty years with the department, Boyce worked as a beat cop, homicide detective, senior hostage negotiator, and lieutenant. She also spent time as a supervising sergeant in Crimes Against Children, reading reports and assigning cases to detectives. Her career gave her a practical understanding of procedure, office politics, and the relationships officers build on the street.

The details matter.

Boyce had loved reading fiction since childhood, but she did not initially imagine herself writing novels. In 2001, a difficult period that included grief, divorce, and the pressures of her work led her to look for an outlet. She enrolled in a creative-writing class at a local fine arts center and discovered that years of observation gave her plenty to work with.

One early assignment asked students to describe following someone. Boyce thought of a night on patrol when a woman flagged down her car and asked for help finding a man she said she had cut. Versions of that woman and her family became part of the material that eventually grew into Out of the Blues.

Published in 2016, Out of the Blues introduces Atlanta homicide detective Sarah “Salt” Alt. Salt's first case revisits the supposed overdose of a blues musician, and Boyce uses the investigation to move through neighborhoods, churches, businesses, and the department itself. The book received the 2017 Georgia Author of the Year Award for detective/mystery, as well as a Pinckley Prize.

Boyce continued Salt's story in Old Bones, where a shooting at a Spelman College vigil and the discovery of a young woman's body put the detective to work in a city under strain. The third novel, The Policeman's Daughter, goes back to Salt's days as a patrol officer and shows the case that helps lead her to homicide.

Across the trilogy, Atlanta is not a generic backdrop. Its history, institutions, housing projects, music, and neighborhood relationships shape what Salt sees and whom she trusts. Boyce has said that many characters and situations are composites drawn from people she met and experiences she or colleagues had on the job.

She retired from the police department in 2008 and continues to live in Atlanta. That lived-in perspective is the thread connecting her fiction. For readers, the books offer police procedurals built from close attention to community, consequence, and the hard work behind an investigation.
