Series background & context
The Mystery With Recipes books are culinary cozies built around two sisters, a family business, and the awkward fact that murder keeps showing up at catered events. Bernadette, usually called Bernie, and her sister Libby Simmons run A Little Taste of Heaven in the fictional upstate New York town of Longely. What begins in A Catered Murder as a high school reunion job gone wrong grows into a long-running series of small-town cases where food and sleuthing are always tangled together.
The sisters are the heart of it. Bernie is impulsive, nosy, funny, and willing to push into places that sensible people would avoid. Libby is steadier, more practical, and more tuned in to the daily grind of keeping a catering business alive. They bicker, they second-guess each other, and they absolutely do not let outsiders take shots at their family. Their father Sean, a retired police chief, is part of the rhythm too, offering opinions, encouragement, and the occasional nudge toward trouble.
Each book hangs its mystery on a gathering that ought to be festive. A wedding, a Christmas competition, a Halloween fundraiser, a Thanksgiving dinner, a St. Patrick's Day celebration, a book club, a doggie wedding, a bake-off. Crawford gets a lot of mileage out of that setup. Catering gives Bernie and Libby access to kitchens, back rooms, guest lists, timing, and gossip, which means they are always close enough to see what the police miss. The events also make room for the series' best recurring pleasures, bustling preparation, family friction, and suspects trying to smile through their nerves.
Longely matters. It is the kind of town where histories overlap and nobody arrives without somebody recognizing the name. That small-town closeness gives the books their cozy feel, but it also raises the stakes. Every case touches customers, neighbors, old classmates, or friends of friends. Under the jokes and food talk, the series keeps circling familiar human problems, envy, money, inheritance, infidelity, status, and the grudges people nurse for years.
The food is comforting. The motives usually are not.
If you like your mysteries warm rather than grim, this series knows the assignment. The books are packed with recipes and enough catering detail to make the work feel real, but they never forget the mystery side. Bernie and Libby are amateur sleuths, not polished detectives, and that is part of the charm. They get things wrong, ask blunt questions, follow bad leads, and keep going anyway. Most entries can be read on their own, especially the later holiday titles, but reading in order lets you watch the family dynamics and the sisters' working partnership deepen over time. Expect cozy energy, sharp sister banter, plenty of food, and murders that start with a party and end with the truth coming out in the open.
