Series background & context

Eye of Isis is a historical mystery series set in Alexandria during the reign of Cleopatra VII, a time when Egypt stood between Rome's competing strongmen and tried to remain a power in its own right. The "Eye of Isis" is the queen's title for her personal fixer and investigator, the person she trusts to handle problems too delicate for open courts or armies. That role falls to Tetisheri, a shrewd woman with ties to both the palace and the bustling streets below.

In Death of an Eye, Tetisheri is still adjusting to her new position when her predecessor is murdered and a vast shipment of newly minted coin disappears. Cleopatra cannot afford either insult, so Tetisheri is sent to retrace the dead man's steps through taverns, counting houses and government offices. The book balances palace intrigue with street level detail, showing Alexandria as a cosmopolitan port where Greek, Egyptian, Jewish and Roman communities collide.

Disappearance of a Scribe begins with an eerie discovery: two bodies standing upright on the harbor floor, anchored with weights around their ankles. With Julius Caesar back in Rome and Egypt trying to regain its footing after civil war, Cleopatra needs calm, not fear, in her capital. Tetisheri's efforts to understand who the victims are and why they were killed pull her into the worlds of scribes, bureaucrats and construction crews rebuilding the city, revealing resentments that reach higher than anyone wants to admit.

In Theft of an Idol, the queen's attention turns to the theater. When Herminia, Alexandria's most famous actress, vanishes just before a major performance, Cleopatra orders Tetisheri to find her quickly, mindful of how much the city needs its entertainments. The search leads from gilded playhouses to grim alleyways, and the case forces Tetisheri to confront how art, poverty and politics intertwine in a city where not everyone enjoys the queen's protection.

Abduction of a Slave sends Tetisheri beyond Egypt's borders to Cyrenaica on what is supposed to be a family errand. Instead she walks into a hornet's nest of Roman spies, King Juba's agents and followers of Pompey and Caesar quietly preparing for the next round of civil war. As she investigates a kidnapping and a suspicious death, she realizes Cleopatra had her own reasons for allowing the trip, and that the stakes are nothing less than which power will control the Middle Sea.

The Eye of Isis books are rich in atmosphere without losing sight of the puzzle at their core. Stabenow shows Cleopatra as a working monarch juggling grain shipments, taxes and political marriages, and Tetisheri as a loyal servant who is not blind to her queen's flaws. Readers who enjoy ancient world mysteries with a strong sense of place and a capable female lead will find a lot to relish here, and the series reads best in order as alliances shift and Tetisheri's responsibilities grow.
