Series background & context

Mysteries from the Sixth Borough, also known as the Hex Files, takes place in Wicked, the paranormal sixth borough of New York. Wicked is home to witches, vampires, werewolves, goblins, elves, necromancers, and all the problems that follow when magic and crime share the same streets.

Former detective Dani DeMarco knows the territory.

Dani is opening her family's pizza parlor when Wicked Never Sleeps begins. She expects work, family, and a little peace after leaving the force. Instead, Captain Matthew King, a vampire who leads the NYPD's supernatural branch, asks for her help with a high-profile double homicide. Dani has a particular talent that could untangle the magic around the victims, but taking the case also puts her in the killer's sights.

The series combines a detective-story structure with a large paranormal world. Dani is tough, skeptical, and often annoyed that trouble keeps finding her. Her history with Matthew gives the investigations an emotional edge. Their relationship is complicated by his position, Dani's past, and the fact that neither of them gets much time to deal with feelings when another body appears.

Each book brings a fresh case, from missing detectives and illegal magic to kidnappings, campus murders, poisoned friends, and threats to the borough as a whole. The magical details are part of the evidence, not just background decoration. Dani has to understand spells, supernatural politics, and old grudges to reach the truth.

Wicked is busy, dangerous, and never boring.

The later books also build a larger arc involving the Hex Files and dangers that could reshape the borough. Because Dani's relationships and the wider threats develop across the series, it is best read in order: Wicked Never Sleeps, Wicked Long Nights, Wicked State of Mind, and onward.

Readers can expect urban fantasy with a mystery at its center, light romantic tension, family ties, and a heroine who would prefer a good slice of pizza to another supernatural emergency. She rarely gets that wish.
