Author bio

Myla Jackson is one of the pen names used by romance writer Elle James, and that split name tells you a lot about her career. Under this name she leans into hotter, wilder romance, often with cowboys, paranormal trouble, or both. She was born on Fairchild Air Force Base in Spokane, Washington, and grew up as a military kid, moving around the country with stops in places like Montana, Texas, California, and Washington.

That kind of childhood gives a writer a lot of settings to steal from.

She started making up stories early. In third grade she was already writing about princesses, castles, and dragons, which is a long way from the saloons, vampires, and complicated grown-up relationships she would later publish, but the instinct was already there. She liked adventure first. The steam came later.

The turn toward professional writing came around the turn of the century, when she and her sister, Delilah Devlin, challenged each other to write a romance novel and really learn the craft. Their first four novels were co-written. In 2004, after years of balancing work, family, and writing goals, she left her job as an information technology manager to write full time.

Before that leap, she had already lived a busy life. She served in both the Army Reserve and the Air Force Reserve, raised three children, and spent many years on a South Texas ranch with horses, cattle, goats, ostriches, and emus. That background matters. It shows up all through the Myla Jackson books, especially the way she writes ranch life, stubborn men, practical women, and the small messes that come with living close to animals and even closer to family.

Under the Myla Jackson name, she moves easily between moods. The Ugly Stick Saloon books are probably the clearest example of her small-town western side, full of Temptation, Texas gossip, cowboys, waitresses, auction dates, second chances, and a lot of heat. The Trouble books go another direction entirely, mixing archaeology, wish magic, and paranormal comedy in stories like Trouble with Harry and Trouble With Mitch.

She likes range.

That range also shows up in books like River Bound, which heads into historical western romance, and Sex, Lies & Vampire Hunters, which throws desire straight into a nighttime world of hospitals, cops, and vampires. Readers who enjoy Jackson usually seem to come back for the same reason: even when the setup is big and sexy, the characters still feel like people with jobs, histories, bruised feelings, and a decent chance of making things harder than they need to be.

Myla Jackson is also part of a bigger writing life. As Elle James, she has written a large body of romantic suspense, mystery, and paranormal romance. The Myla Jackson books are where she seems especially happy to play with cowboy swagger, magical trouble, and stories that are a little outrageous on purpose.

Today she lives in Northwest Arkansas with her husband and dogs, while still writing, traveling, and managing her own publishing work. It feels like a practical ending for a practical kind of career. A lot of books, a lot of miles, and a storyteller who clearly never got over the fun of making things happen on the page.
