Author bio

Kate Douglas is a lifelong Californian who spent a long time learning exactly what kind of writer she wanted to be. Long before Wolf Tales made her a familiar name to paranormal romance readers, she was writing radio copy for KCEY in Turlock, California, back in 1972. Those quick little commercials, selling everything from pig feed to refrigerators, turned out to be practical training in concise writing, even if she could not have known that yet.

She did not come to fiction in one straight line.

Over the years she also wrote and illustrated the Skeeter Mosquito educational cartoons used by mosquito abatement districts, and she worked as a reporter for a small-town weekly newspaper. That job mattered. She covered high school sports, drug busts, and a forest fire that came much too close to home, and she has said it taught her a lot about deadlines and how people act when life gets messy.

Then, in the mid-1980s, she decided to write a romance. One early turning point came after she dreamed an entire story and got up to write down as much of it as she could remember in longhand. That first book did not sell. A lot of other submissions did not sell either. She kept writing anyway, even when the process was slow, expensive, and full of rejection.

She kept writing.

In 1998 she sold to a very early ebook publisher, back when ebooks were still a strange new idea. More online publishing followed, and so did more persistence. It was not until 2005, about twenty years after she finished that first romance, that she signed with Kensington. By then she had already put in the kind of time that makes an overnight success look a lot less overnight.

What changed everything was Wolf Tales. The story began life as an online serial, then became the book that helped launch Kensington's Aphrodisia line in 2006. From there the Chanku world grew into the long-running series most readers connect with her first, a sensual shapeshifter saga built around pack bonds, family, danger, and a very involved reading order. She later returned to that world with the next-generation Spirit Wild books, including Dark Wolf and Dark Spirit.

But Douglas never stayed in one lane for long. She moved from shapeshifters to demon-fighting fantasy in DemonFire, to erotic science fiction in Dream Bound, and then into contemporary romantic suspense with the Northern California wine-country books Tangled, Intimate, Redemption, and Awakened. Across all those different setups, readers tend to find the same thing: strong attraction, emotional loyalty, and characters trying to build trust while the world around them gets complicated.

That mix feels very much like her. Big feelings, busy plots, and people who want both love and safety.

Her books often return to found family, outsiders, protective communities, and people discovering that desire can be both disruptive and healing. Even when the premise gets wonderfully wild, there is usually a grounded human thread running through it. Someone wants home. Someone wants to belong. Someone has to decide whether they are brave enough to choose both love and change.

These days Douglas lives in Georgetown, California, after leaving Healdsburg and moving back to the mountains with her husband of nearly fifty years. They have two grown children, six grandchildren, and a home with plenty of wildlife nearby. It sounds like a good place for a writer who has spent so many years imagining hidden worlds just beyond the edge of the ordinary.
