Series background & context

Mydworth Mysteries follows Sir Harry Mortimer and his American wife, Kat, as they investigate crimes in late-1920s England and beyond. Written by Neil Richards and Matthew Costello, the series pairs historical cozy mysteries with the pace of an adventure story. The central partnership brings different backgrounds together, giving the couple more than one way to approach a suspicious death or a story that doesn't quite add up.

Harry is returning home, while Kat is entering a new world.

Their arrival in Mydworth introduces the contrast between an English aristocrat and a woman whose American upbringing hasn't prepared her to take every local convention seriously. Both have experience outside the apparently quiet community. Harry has worked as a spy, and Kat is quite capable of handling danger herself. Their marriage supplies a continuing relationship across the books, while each new case gives them another problem to work through as a team.

The setting offers country houses, social occasions and the expectations that go with class and reputation. It also includes a changing world of fast cars and modern business. That mixture keeps the mysteries from being confined to a drawing room. A local firm's stolen deliveries, for instance, can put livelihoods and lives at risk, while an elegant gathering may conceal a much more personal motive for murder.

The series opens with A Shot in the Dark, establishing the couple in Harry's home town. Further cases include A Little Night Murder and London Calling!, as their investigations take them into different situations. The attraction of the format is meeting the same two investigators again without needing every mystery to repeat the same setting or type of crime. Their skills and their differing perspectives provide the continuity.

Travel also expands the series beyond Mydworth. In A Fatal Affair, a wedding-anniversary trip to Venice is interrupted when the American State Department asks for help investigating an undercover agent's death. A holiday becomes a race to uncover a conspiracy. Other stories return attention to the community and its visitors, showing how much can be hidden behind a respectable appearance or an apparently clear explanation.

The tone combines a cozy mystery's interest in clues and concealed motives with more direct risks to the investigators. Harry and Kat may move comfortably among stylish clothes and expensive surroundings, but those advantages don't make them safe. Begin with A Shot in the Dark to meet them and understand their arrival in Mydworth, then follow the books in publication order. The continuing pleasure lies in watching a capable married couple test the stories people tell and discover what those stories leave out.
