My Fair Godmother Books in Order

The My Fair Godmother books take ordinary teen problems and then gleefully make them much stranger. A breakup, a bad audition, a fight with family, those would be enough trouble in most YA romances. Here, those moments are what attract Chrissy Everstar, a fairy godmother in training whose help is never as helpful as it sounds.

Chrissy is the glue that holds the series together. She is funny, impulsive, distractible, and forever a little too confident for her own skill level. Because she keeps mishearing wishes and handling magic badly, the heroines in these books do not get dream makeovers or instant happy endings. They get dropped into fairy tale situations that are far messier, funnier, and more dangerous than expected.

Each book follows a different girl, which gives the series variety while keeping the same comic engine. Savannah wants a prince for prom and ends up tangled in versions of Cinderella and Snow White. Tansy gets Robin Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, and a whole new level of family chaos. Sadie, after bombing a talent audition in spectacular fashion, lands in magical trouble that includes bargains, thievery, and a fairy queen who is not in the mood to be crossed.

Nothing goes the straightforward way.

What keeps the books moving is the balance between big magical problems and very recognizable feelings. These girls are embarrassed, angry, hopeful, stubborn, and more romantic than they want to admit. Even when dragons, trolls, or enchanted bargains show up, the emotional stakes stay grounded in things like trust, self-respect, family tension, and figuring out whether a guy is actually worth the trouble.

The fairy tale material is handled in a playful way rather than a solemn one. Janette Rallison is clearly more interested in what would happen if a modern teenager had to survive a botched magical quest than in offering a straight retelling. So the tone stays quick, bright, and full of banter. The romance matters, but so does the comedy of watching smart girls try to think their way out of magical disasters.

You can read these books for the fairy tale mashups, and they absolutely deliver on that front. But the real fun is Chrissy herself, plus the way each heroine has to clean up a wish gone wrong and learn something about what she actually wanted in the first place. If you want fantasy that is light on gloom and heavy on charm, this series is a very easy one to like.
