Author bio
Janette Rallison was born in 1966 and raised in Pullman, Washington, a small town that clearly stayed with her. The town shows up not just in her settings, but in the way she writes about school drama, neighbors, families, and the strange feeling that everybody knows your business.
She started writing when she was six years old and has said she still has that first homemade book, stapled together from notebook paper. Later she studied English teaching at Brigham Young University, which gave her both a love of story and a practical way of thinking about how books work on the page.
Her path into publishing was steady rather than flashy. She first published with LDS presses and also wrote adult romance as Sierra St. James. A turning point came when a teen novel was rejected in one market, she removed the specifically Mormon references, and sent it to a national publisher instead. That opened a much bigger door.
She kept writing.
A lot of readers meet her through the funny, high-concept young adult books. My Fair Godmother plays with fairy tales and bad wishes, Just One Wish mixes Hollywood comedy with real family worry, and My Double Life turns a celebrity look-alike setup into a fast, romantic mess. Under the name C. J. Hill, she moved into fantasy and science fiction with books like Slayers and Erasing Time, proving that dragons and dystopian futures still make room for banter, crushes, and emotional stakes.
That range is part of what makes her books easy to keep recommending. Even when the premise gets wild, a fairy godmother in training, dragon camps, or twins pulled centuries into the future, the characters still worry about the same things people always do. They want to be liked. They want to be brave. They want to stop making fools of themselves in front of attractive people.
Humor matters to her.
Her stories often come back to small towns, awkward crushes, misunderstandings, family pressure, and forgiveness. She has even joked that there is already enough angst in real life, so she prefers to bring readers humor and romance along with the chaos. That balance shows up again and again, whether she is writing about a prom disaster, a dragon attack, or a woman trying not to fall for the cowboy next door.
She also writes adult romance, and books like The Cowboy and the Girl Next Door and My Fair Lacey show the same quick pace and playful voice in an older lane. These stories still have sparks and mishaps, but they also lean into work, home, money, and second chances.
Now she lives in Arizona with her husband and stays close to a big family that includes five children and grandchildren. On her author site, she writes with the same humor found in her novels, talking about misplaced household items, deadlines, dogs, and the cats that have apparently appointed her their person. It feels very on brand. Her books do too.
