Small Town, Big Sky Romance Books in Order

The Small Town, Big Sky Romance books are built on one of Janette Rallison's favorite ideas, that history makes romance messier and better. These are not stories about strangers meeting cute and starting from zero. They are stories about people who already know each other, sometimes too well, and have to sort through years of embarrassment, hurt feelings, bad timing, and old attraction.

That gives the series a very specific flavor. In A Longtime (and now NFL player) Nemesis, Olivia gets stuck working alongside Carson Clark, the hometown enemy who grew up into a professional football player. In A Longtime (and at one point Illegal) Crush, Elsie has to face the older brother's friend she never quite got over. In A Longtime (and now the boss) Ex-Boyfriend, Riley's heartbreak comes back in the form of a workplace reunion she absolutely did not ask for.

So the series is full of loaded reunions. Weddings, jobs, hometown returns, work projects, and family complications keep forcing people into each other's orbit. Nobody gets the luxury of a clean slate. That is the point.

The tension here is mostly emotional, not external. These books care about what happens when two people remember the same past differently, or when one person thinks a relationship is over while the other is still carrying questions. Pride, misunderstanding, and small-town memory do a lot of the heavy lifting. Because the characters have history, the banter tends to land with extra bite.

The setting helps too. Even without leaning hard on scenery, the books have that wide-open, everybody-knows-everybody feel promised by the series name. There are inns, cabins, hometown events, family businesses, and enough local overlap to make avoidance basically impossible. That is great news for readers and terrible news for the characters.

Tone matters a lot here. These are sweet romances with plenty of chemistry, but they stay funny and approachable. The heroes may be a little too confident, and the heroines may be determined not to need them, yet the books keep returning to kindness, second chances, and the hope that growing up might let people do better the second time around.

If you like romances where the hardest part is not meeting someone, but admitting what has always been there, this series is a good fit. Each book can stand on its own, but together they make a satisfying set of stories about old feelings refusing to stay in the past.
