Series background & context

The Muddy River mysteries are paranormal adventures set in a hidden community in southwestern Indiana, near the Ohio River. Mortals cannot easily find the town because the Fae have helped protect it with illusion magic, while wards keep out people and creatures who mean harm. For the supernatural residents who have settled there, that protection is not just convenient. It is the reason they have a chance to build ordinary lives.

Ordinary is relative in Muddy River.

The town is home to witches, vampires, shifters, Fae, druids, demons, sirens, and many people whose backgrounds and abilities overlap. They run businesses, meet at the local bar, raise children, fall in love, and try to live peacefully beside one another. But their safety depends on a fierce shared rule: when danger comes for one of them, everyone helps.

At the center are Hester, a powerful witch, and Raven, a fire demon who serves as Muddy River's enforcer. Hester's magic and Raven's willingness to face threats head-on make them natural protectors, but the larger community is never just a backdrop. Friends, coven members, neighbors, and newcomers all bring their own gifts to a fight, especially when the danger is too large for one pair to handle.

The stakes can get serious fast.

The shorter Muddy River entries build on the setting established in the earlier Raven and Hester stories. In Under Siege, hostile mortals turn their attention toward the hidden town. Tattoos & Portents sends Hester and Raven after a voodoo priest who has captured witches and raised an undead force. In Bounty Hunted, a threat from Derek's past puts the town's promise to protect its own to the test. Survival raises the scale again when old supernatural powers from Europe target Muddy River and its strongest residents.

The tone is a blend of supernatural mystery, urban fantasy, and community-centered adventure. There are magic battles and dark threats, but there are also meals, friendships, relationships, and practical conversations about how a town survives. The books favor a broad cast over a lone hero, so readers get a sense of a whole community pulling together.

These stories work best after meeting Hester and Raven in Black Magic Can Backfire, but Under Siege is a good entry point for readers who want a quick visit to Muddy River. Expect protective magic, found-family loyalty, and a town that refuses to let outsiders decide who deserves to be safe.
