Series background & context

The Mill Pond series is set in a small Indiana town where people know one another's business, food is a social event, and a new arrival is noticed quickly. The town has farms, local shops, a growing food scene, and a rural resort that draws visitors looking for a slower pace. For the people who live there, though, Mill Pond is less about scenery than the friendships and routines that make a place feel like home.

Romance has a way of disrupting those routines.

Each book follows a different couple, usually people who are capable, busy, and a little cautious about letting someone close. The stories use familiar contemporary-romance situations, including newcomers in town, former heartbreak, demanding careers, family responsibilities, and the question of whether a temporary change can become a lasting life. The stakes are emotional rather than dangerous, but they matter because the characters have built real lives before love arrives.

Cooking Up Trouble opens the series with Tessa Lawrence, who grows berries and makes jams and baked goods, and Ian McGregor, a polished New Yorker hoping to open a luxury resort beside her farm. Their instant connection is complicated by Ian's existing fiancée and Tessa's reluctance to risk another disappointment. It introduces the series' mix of local food, friendly interference, and people learning that first impressions can be wrong.

Mill Pond is a town that gets involved.

The later books widen the circle. Opposites Distract brings artist and novelist Harmony Meyer together with businessman Brody McGregor. Love on Tap follows widowed chef Paula Hull and bar owner Chase Atwood. Spicing Things Up pairs chef Tyne with stained-glass artist Daphne, while First Kiss, on the House gives schoolteacher Miriam and single father, brewery owner Joel, a chance to reconsider their independence. In Special Delivery, traveling nurse Karli Redding returns to help her grandfather and finds unexpected support from mailman Keagan Monroe.

Food and work are woven through the romances. Characters run farms, kitchens, restaurants, shops, schools, a brewery, and other businesses, so their ambitions do not disappear when a relationship begins. The books also make room for friends who offer advice, neighbors who lend a hand, and family members who sometimes know exactly when to mind their own business and when not to.

The tone is gentle, warm, and rooted in everyday life. Each romance can be read on its own, but reading in order lets you see familiar faces find their own happy endings and watch Mill Pond grow as a community. Start with Cooking Up Trouble for Tessa and Ian's story and a full introduction to the town.
