Series background & context
The Jazzi Zanders mysteries take place in River Bluffs, Indiana, where Jazzi makes her living turning neglected houses into homes. She works with her cousin Jerod and contractor Ansel, buying rundown properties, solving their practical problems, and hoping the finished place will make a profit. The work gives each book a built-in setting full of dusty rooms, old belongings, repair crews, and secrets that have been left behind.
Then a body turns up.
Jazzi is not a police officer, but she has a sharp eye, strong local ties, and a hard time walking away when someone she cares about is in trouble. Her cases often begin close to home, whether a discovery at a worksite, a friend caught under suspicion, or a family connection that makes a crime feel personal. Detective Gaff handles the official investigation, while Jazzi keeps asking questions and notices the details other people might miss.
The first book, The Body in the Attic, sets the pattern when Jazzi and Jerod begin clearing a fixer-upper and find human remains connected to Jazzi's own family. From there, the series moves through wetlands, construction projects, apartments, salons, and other corners of River Bluffs. The mysteries are generally self-contained, so each book offers a new crime and a fresh group of suspects, while the ongoing relationships develop in the background.
The renovation work matters as much as window dressing. Readers spend time with Jazzi's crew figuring out what a house needs, tracking costs, choosing finishes, and dealing with the inevitable surprises that come with old buildings. It gives the series a practical, lived-in feel. A troubled foundation or sealed-up room can be both a construction headache and the first hint that something is wrong.
Family is the other major thread.
Jazzi has a wide circle of relatives, friends, and coworkers, and the books make time for shared meals, Sunday gatherings, pets, romance, and the small negotiations of everyday life. Ansel is more than the handsome contractor on the crew, and Jerod is not simply a business partner. Their changing relationships give the series continuity without taking over the puzzle at the center of each installment.
These are cozy mysteries with real danger but a warm, community-minded tone. Expect home renovation details, plenty of food, a close-knit cast, and crimes that disturb a familiar place before Jazzi and her friends work to set things right. Start with The Body in the Attic for the strongest introduction to Jazzi, Jerod, Ansel, and the River Bluffs world.
