Series background & context

This series is romantic suspense with a glossy surface and a dark core. The hook is strong from the start: Stephanie Fitzgerald goes looking for her missing sister and ends up on an exclusive island resort where guests pay to have elaborate fantasies acted out. The man at the center of that world is Mr. Rook, and from the beginning it is obvious he knows more than he says.

The books work best in order, because Stephanie's investigation and her relationship with Rook are really one long unraveling. Mr. Rook sets the bait. Pawn gets her inside the system. Check pushes everything toward the final confrontation, with trust and desire getting harder to separate the deeper she goes.

This is not a light beach read, even though it starts on an island.

The tone is moody, secretive, and sensual. Pamfiloff keeps asking what Stephanie is willing to risk for the truth, and what happens when the man who might have the answers is also the man she cannot stop wanting. If you like hidden identities, dangerous luxury, and slow reveals, this trilogy is built for that mood.
