Moriarty's Men plays with Sherlockian ideas, but it is very much its own thing. The heroine is not a side character in someone else's detective story. She is the criminal mastermind. She escaped a horrific family and a demonic cult, built her own empire in London's underworld, and plans to use every scrap of power she has to get revenge.

The problem is the demon she bargained with wants payment.

That sets up the series beautifully. To save her soul, she needs help from three men who should be her natural enemies: brilliant detectives with very different temperaments and very little reason to trust her. The resulting dynamic is part heist story, part supernatural thriller, and part seduction game. Everyone is trying to outthink everyone else, even while desire keeps complicating the plan.

London gives the books a stylish, shadowy backdrop. Crime, class, and secret magic all press together here, so the series feels a little more urban and a little more cunning than some of Chase's school-based fantasies. The heroine is especially fun because she is competent from the start. She is not learning how dangerous the world is. She already knows. What she has to figure out is whether she can let anyone close without losing the edge that kept her alive.

The demonic cult angle also gives the broader plot real momentum. This is not just a romance between thieves and lawmen. It is a war against people who traffic in souls and cruelty, and every step forward threatens to drag old wounds back into the open.

Trust is never simple here.

It is darker than a costume drama and more intimate than a straight mystery, which is exactly what makes it work.
