Author bio

Liane Moriarty was born in Sydney, Australia, back in 1966. She didn’t grow up as a lonely only child; instead, she was the eldest of six. That meant growing up in a very busy, very lively household. It was the kind of place where storytelling wasn't just a hobby, but a way of life.

It clearly ran in the family, too. Her sister, Jaclyn Moriarty, is also a published author, proving that a love for words was a shared trait among the siblings.

Before she became a household name in the world of fiction, Liane lived a fairly normal working life. She spent quite a few years navigating the fast-paced world of advertising and marketing. Eventually, she gained enough experience to strike out on her own and started a small agency.

She later moved into freelance copywriting, a job that requires a very specific set of skills. This period was crucial for her development as a writer. She wrote just about everything you can imagine. She crafted scripts for television commercials and even wrote the text you read on the back of cereal boxes.

It might sound like unglamorous work, but it taught her valuable lessons. As a copywriter, you have to grab a reader's attention instantly. You learn that every word counts.

Her journey to becoming a full-time novelist wasn't about waiting for a sudden strike of inspiration. It was actually quite practical. She decided to enroll in a master’s degree at Macquarie University in Sydney.

She needed to complete a manuscript as part of her coursework. That assignment became her first novel, Three Wishes. It was published in 2004. This success launched a career that would eventually turn her into a global bestseller.

In the beginning, her books were often lighter in tone. They were fun, relatable stories about relationships and family. However, she eventually shifted toward darker, more suspenseful narratives. She began to peel back the layers of seemingly perfect suburban lives to see what was hiding underneath.

She is now famous for this specific blend of storytelling. She has a talent for combining sharp social observations with gripping mysteries. She explores the secrets we keep, the lies we tell to protect ourselves, and the messy complexities of female friendship. She often sets her stories in places that feel very familiar, like school drop-off zones or neighborhood barbecues, which makes the drama feel even more real.

Her work has found a massive audience on our screens, too. It turns out that her characters translate vividly to television.

Big Little Lies was adapted into an award-winning series. It starred recognizable actors like Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, bringing Moriarty’s complex characters to life for a whole new audience. Following that success, Nine Perfect Strangers and Apples Never Fall were also developed into major series. Viewers seem to love her twists and character dynamics just as much as readers do.

Interestingly, Moriarty doesn’t only write for adults. She also writes for a much younger crowd. Her Nicola Berry series allows her to flex a different creative muscle. These books are whimsical and humorous, following an ordinary schoolgirl on wild intergalactic adventures. It is a fun departure from the domestic secrets of her adult novels.

Despite her huge international success and the Hollywood adaptations of her work, Liane keeps things grounded. She currently lives in Sydney with her husband, Adam, and their two children.
