Morgan Charmley Books in Order

The Morgan Charmley books take a very familiar school-story wish, I just want to fit in, and make it much harder by giving the heroine actual magical powers. Morgan has spent years trying to prove she can control her witchcraft well enough to attend a normal school. By the time Teen Witch begins, that is the dream. She does not want a life of constant magical supervision. She wants classmates, gossip, ordinary lessons, and the chance to be a normal thirteen-year-old.

Of course, normal does not last long. Morgan may finally have reached regular school, but she brings a lot of supernatural baggage with her. She has powers that can solve problems much too quickly, which makes them extremely tempting to use for the wrong reasons. She also has to keep those powers hidden from non-magical classmates, which means every little slip can turn into a major crisis. Birchall gets a lot of comedy out of that setup, especially when Morgan's hopes of seeming cool collide with the reality of being a young witch under pressure.

The tone is bright and playful, but there is a clear ongoing story underneath. Morgan wants friendship and belonging, yet the magical world keeps intruding. Old rivalries, secret identities, and rules she does not fully agree with all complicate her new life. In Spells and Secrets, things get even trickier as another hidden witch causes trouble and Morgan has to navigate a connection with someone from a group she has been taught to distrust.

That part of the series gives it a little more weight. These books are not dark fantasy, but they are interested in prejudice, loyalty, and the difference between what children are told and what they learn for themselves. Morgan is growing up in two worlds at once, and each one keeps exposing the blind spots of the other. That is a smart thread to run through stories that are otherwise very funny and fast.

School matters here just as much as magic. Morgan still has to make friends, survive awkward moments, and work out how much of herself to show. The spells are fun, but the real tension often comes from social life, exactly as it should in a series like this. Birchall keeps the balance nicely, never letting the fantasy side completely swallow the coming-of-age side.

Morgan is messy, funny, and easy to cheer for.

If you like middle grade or younger YA fantasy with secret magic, school drama, and a heroine who is trying hard not to make everything worse, even though she often does, this series is a good fit.
