The Hotel Royale books move from school corridors into a grand London hotel, and that change of setting gives Katy Birchall plenty to play with. The series follows Felicity, known as Flick, Royale, the teenage daughter of the hotel's owner. She has grown up surrounded by luxury suites, demanding guests, famous faces, and staff who know her far too well. For Flick, though, all that glamour has become normal, which means she often takes it for granted, right up until life starts forcing her to pay attention.

Flick is a different kind of heroine from Anna Huntley in The It Girl books. She is not shy. She is confident, impulsive, and sometimes gloriously self-involved. That makes her very funny, but it also gives her somewhere to grow. In Secrets of a Teenage Heiress, she gets into trouble and has to start seeing the hotel not just as her home and personal playground, but as a place full of work, history, and people with jobs to do. That shift, from entitled teenager to someone who starts noticing the world around her, is a big part of the series' appeal.

The hotel setting matters a lot. Guests come and go, celebrities sweep through, parties loom, and every corridor can lead to either a great opportunity or a total disaster. Birchall uses that space well. It feels glamorous enough to be escapist, but it also becomes the place where Flick's real problems show up. Friendships get tested. Crushes get complicated. Public embarrassment is always just around the corner. Her dachshund Fritz, who has his own online following, adds another layer of comic chaos.

As the series goes on, the outside attention gets even louder. Vlogging, reality TV, and social drama all start crowding in, and Flick has to decide whether she actually wants the version of fame she keeps chasing. That makes these books about more than fancy parties and famous guests. They are about image, performance, and what happens when you are old enough to enjoy privilege but not yet wise enough to understand it.

There is romance here, too, but it stays tied to Flick's larger story. The boys in her orbit matter because they reflect different versions of the life she thinks she wants. Just as important are the friendships and the family tensions, especially her relationship with her mother and her growing understanding of the people who keep the hotel running.

This is a glossy series, but it has some bite.

If you want London glamour, celebrity mess, funny dialogue, and a heroine who has to learn that charm and status are not the same as character, Hotel Royale is a fun one to read in order.
