Author bio

Katy Birchall grew up in Essex, went to school in Surrey, and seems to have been pulled in two directions from early on, books on one side and theatre on the other. Both stayed with her. That mix helps explain a lot about her fiction, which is usually quick on its feet, very chatty, and full of characters who can make a total mess of things while still keeping your sympathy.

She was making up stories young. In one piece about her life as a writer, she mentioned a homemade family newspaper called The Birchall Times, which she wrote when she was about eight.

At the University of Manchester, Birchall studied English Literature and Linguistics, then completed a master's in Post-1900 Literature, Theories and Cultures. University was also where her theatre side got louder. In 2011 she won the 24/7 Theatre Festival Award for Most Promising New Writer for a comedy she wrote, produced, and directed herself. That background in stage comedy matters, because her books often run on timing, embarrassment, and the exact wrong thing happening at the exact worst moment.

Before and alongside her fiction, she worked in journalism, including at Country Life magazine, where she built a long career as a writer and editor. You can see that world feeding into the books too. Birchall likes public settings, glossy workplaces, famous people, weddings, schools, hotels, places where everyone is trying to keep up appearances while quietly falling apart.

Her debut novel, The It Girl, arrived in 2015 and introduced Anna Huntley, a shy, awkward schoolgirl who suddenly finds herself caught up in celebrity attention when her dad becomes engaged to a famous actress. The books that followed, including Team Awkward and Don't Tell the Bridesmaid, made clear what Birchall does well: funny social chaos, big feelings, and heroines who are not cool in the effortless way, but are easy to root for because they keep going anyway.

That same mix shows up in other younger fiction. Secrets of a Teenage Heiress moves into a luxury London hotel and follows Flick Royale through friendship drama and public embarrassment. Morgan Charmley: Teen Witch takes school comedy and adds magic. Her retelling of Jane Austen's Emma makes sense too, because Birchall has often spoken about loving Austen, and you can feel that affection in the matchmaking disasters, sharp observations, and fondness for flawed girls who need to learn a little humility.

Then came her adult romantic comedies. The Secret Bridesmaid was her adult fiction debut and follows a professional bridesmaid trying to hold together a society wedding without losing her mind. The Wedding Season and The Last Word kept that warm, funny, fast-moving feel, while One Last Thing adds a more emotional family thread to the mix. Even when the setting is glamorous, Birchall's books usually come back to the same things: friendship, dignity, second chances, and the hope that a disaster can still turn into a good story.

She likes a little sparkle.

More recently, books like Hot Young Royals show how comfortable she is with glitzy, high-pressure worlds, especially when they give her room to write about identity, class, and crushes with a light touch. Across age groups, readers tend to come to Birchall for humor, pace, and characters who are trying very hard to keep it together.

She now lives in London with her family and her rescue dog, Bono. That grounded, slightly chaotic warmth feels very much in step with the books themselves.
