Series background & context

Monster Hearts is one of Cara Wylde's clearest blends of science fiction, monster romance, and fated-mate heat. The setup is simple and fun. Alien monsters are real, they have made their way to Earth through portals, and a secret group called IMRA has decided that capturing and studying them is a perfectly sensible idea.

That means many of these books begin in labs, research facilities, or controlled environments that are not nearly as controlled as the humans in charge think they are. The heroines are often scientists, technicians, or animal and medical specialists who arrive expecting a job, a project, or a routine assignment. Instead, they meet an alien being who looks like something out of myth, an orc, naga, kraken, minotaur, gargoyle, centaur, or satyr, and realize the real problem is not the research. It is the bond forming between them.

That bond is the spine of the series.

Each book follows a new couple, so the romances stand on their own, but the shared world matters. IMRA keeps treating these beings as specimens, while the books keep reminding the reader that they are people with histories, cultures, loyalties, and enemies of their own. Some are prisoners. Some are fugitives. Some are stranded far from home. A few are royalty, warriors, or captains who have every reason not to trust humans, until one specific human changes the equation.

The tone is lighter than Cara Wylde's darkest work, but there is still danger underneath the fun. Escapes go wrong. Secrets come out. Institutions lie. The heroines usually have to decide whether they are willing to walk away from the safe, familiar world they know in order to protect someone the rest of society is calling a monster.

So if you want smart women, unusual heroes, fast pacing, and a world where romance starts in the middle of a containment breach, this is the series to pick up.
