Series background & context
Monster Bites is a spin-off from Michele Mills's larger Hyrrokin world, and it reads like the shorter, sharper, slightly stranger cousin to Monsters Love Curvy Girls. The books are compact, but the setup variety is wide. One story is set in a monastery. Another in a haunted castle. Others move through family compounds, mafia households, and stations far from home.
That range is a big part of the fun.
The series begins with Her Alien Priest, where a Hyrrokin high priest trying to finish a vow of celibacy meets the absolute worst person for that plan. Her Alien Ghost adds a gothic note, with a haunted estate and a not-quite-corporeal soldier. As the series continues through Her Alien Angel, Her Alien Ex-Con, Her Alien Bully, Her Alien Stepbrother, and Her Alien Husband, the books keep widening the world without losing the fast-hit romantic structure.
There is also a light ongoing arc around the Brimstone family, especially Prince Brimstone and the relatives around him. That means some books work perfectly well as standalones, but readers who go in order will catch more of the recurring personalities, family tensions, and jokes carried from one novella to the next.
The tone here is a little more playful and a little more outrageous than in some of Mills's other series. The Hyrrokin heroes are still horned, possessive, and dangerous-looking, but the books enjoy pushing them into unusual setups. Celibate priest. Ghost soldier. Ex-con. Mafia heir. Sudden husband. The hook changes every time.
If you already like the Hyrrokin world, this page is an easy next stop. And if you want to sample Michele Mills in shorter bursts, Monster Bites is one of her best series for that.
