The Vandal and the Virgin

by Michele Mills

2020

Princess Julia is meant to be a sacrifice, then a prize for the terrifying king who conquers her land. He expects a meek bride, but her outlawed magic could bring down everything.

Series background & context

Battle-Beasts leans more toward fantasy romance than some of Michele Mills's more contemporary-feeling monster books. The world has kingdoms, conquerors, old customs, and magic that matters in the balance of power.

The anchor title here is The Vandal and the Virgin.

That story follows Julia, a princess who is already having a miserable day before invading forces make it much worse. She is meant to be a political prize and a sacrificial figure, but she is not weak, and she is not powerless. Her secret magic changes the whole shape of the forced-marriage setup. The king she is handed to is dangerous, feared, and very much not human, but the romance turns on the fact that Julia can fight back.

What gives this page its identity is that mix of fairy-tale structure and harsher martial stakes. You have a heroine trapped inside old rules, an overwhelming warlord hero, and a setting where survival is tied to politics, conquest, and what kind of ruler will emerge from a violent union. The emotional question is not just whether the couple desires each other. It is whether trust can exist at all when the relationship begins inside defeat and occupation.

So while this is still a Michele Mills romance, with heat and a strong pull between the leads, it reads a little different from her alien-office or small-town-orc stories. It feels bigger, heavier, and more courtly. If that blend of fantasy, danger, forced proximity, and hidden power is what you are after, Battle-Beasts has a very clear flavor.
