Author bio
Monette Michaels is an Indiana writer whose books move between romantic suspense, science fiction romance, and paranormal mystery without ever losing their taste for speed and danger. She was born and raised in Indiana and still lives near Indianapolis. She is married to her college sweetheart, and they have a son.
Before fiction took over, Michaels spent many years practicing law. That work gave her a front-row seat to conflict, pressure, and human messiness, which later fed directly into her novels. She has said that clients, opposing counsel, and the problems she handled helped ignite her need to write stories of her own.
Writing was not a complete career leap. Law meant daily writing, and she also brought a science background to the page. In talking about her early work, Michaels has pointed to books like Death Benefits and Blind-Sided as stories that stayed close to what she knew, legal and medical-legal suspense. Her husband is a pathologist, which helps explain why the medical details in those books feel especially at home.
Then a writing instructor pushed her out of that safe lane. Michaels has said she was urged to stop writing only what she knew firsthand and try something stranger. That shift led to Fatal Vision, a romantic suspense novel with paranormal elements and a psychic heroine, and then to Green Fire, built around a woman with stone powers. Green Fire later became a 2003 Dream Realm finalist at ArmadilloCon.
She likes danger on the page.
You can see that clearly in the Security Specialists International books, beginning with Eye of the Storm. Those stories revolve around a private security firm run by former military and law enforcement professionals, and Michaels uses that setup for kidnappings, rescue missions, traitors, border trouble, and the kind of romantic pressure cooker she clearly enjoys. The heroines in these books are never decorative. They are doctors, pilots, agents, firefighters, and women who know how to keep moving when everything around them gets bad.
She takes the same love of high stakes into space in Prime Obsession, Prime Selection, and Prime Imperative. The Prime novels mix starships, war, politics, psychic bonds, and a race fighting extinction, but the emotional engine is still two strong people learning how to trust each other. On another shelf entirely, The Virtuous Vampire and the What A Witch books show her lighter side, with witches, shifters, magical trouble, and a good deal more humor.
Even when the setup gets wild, Michaels likes to keep one foot in the practical details.
She has said that every book comes with research notes, whether the subject is guns, branches of the military, maps, magic, or other paranormal pieces that need grounding. She has also said she gets ideas from news articles, nonfiction, and magazines, which fits the way her plots often begin with a sharp outside threat and then grow bigger. Her fiction may be escapist, but it tends to start from something concrete and then push it into trouble.
Michaels has also written under the name Rae Morgan, a pen name she used for sexier paranormal and romantic suspense stories before folding later work back under her own name. These days, she is still in central Indiana and, by her own telling elsewhere, still shares life with family and one very opinionated cat. The broad shape of her work has stayed the same: strong heroines, forceful heroes, fast plots, and enough outside danger to make trust matter.
