Elizabeth Bear (Sarah Monette) Books in Order

Elizabeth Bear and Sarah Monette wrote the three Iskryne novels together, beginning with A Companion to Wolves. These books share a world of hard weather, isolated settlements, and old customs that are being tested from every direction. They are fantasy adventures, but the adventure grows out of daily life as much as from battles.

The Northlands depend on wolfcarls, human warriors who form close telepathic bonds with enormous trellwolves. A wolfcarl does not simply ride into danger with a useful animal companion. The bond changes how people understand family, sex, loyalty, authority, and even personal identity. It also makes wolfcarls essential defenders against trolls and other northern threats, whether the wider human society feels comfortable with them or not.

The first book follows Isolfr, a young nobleman whose future changes when he is chosen for the Wolfhall and paired with the queen wolf Viradechtis. His father had another life in mind for him. Isolfr instead has to learn pack rules, military responsibility, and the unsettling fact that honor can look very different when wolves are part of the conversation.

Winter is never just scenery here.

The Tempering of Men takes place after the first war has ended, when the work of making peace proves just as difficult as surviving invasion. Isolfr and his companions are trying to establish a new hall while leaders, rivals, and frightened outsiders argue over what the wolfcarls should be allowed to become. The pressure comes from politics, old resentments, and the practical demands of keeping a community alive.

With An Apprentice to Elves, the story moves forward through Isolfr's daughter, Alfgyfa. Raised around the Wolfhall, she understands both its freedoms and the limits placed on women in the human world beyond it. Her apprenticeship with the elf matriarch Tin puts her in the middle of diplomacy between cultures that do not always share the same assumptions, language, or goals.

That shift gives the series a useful wider view. Iskryne is not only about one chosen warrior or one war. It is about how a society changes when its young people inherit a world that no longer fits the old rules. The wolves, elves, and humans all have something to lose, and no group has an easy answer.
