Sarah Monette Books in Order

Sarah Monette was born in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, one of the three communities created for the Manhattan Project. Her work has since ranged across fantasy, horror, mystery, and the space between them, with a special interest in people navigating systems that are larger, stranger, and less forgiving than they first appear.

Books were there from the beginning, and so was serious study. Monette earned her B.A. at Case Western Reserve University, then completed an M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her academic path centered on literature, but her fiction has never felt like homework. It is full of haunted archives, compromised institutions, difficult families, and people who have to think their way through trouble.

She began by publishing short stories. In 2003, her story “Three Letters from the Queen of Elfland” won a Gaylactic Spectrum Award, an early sign of the imaginative range and queer perspective that would remain part of her work.

Her first novel, Mélusine, arrived in 2005 and opened the four-book Doctrine of Labyrinths series. It brings together Felix Harrowgate, a wizard whose ordered life is coming apart, and Mildmay Foxe, a thief and former assassin with problems of his own. The later books, The Virtu, The Mirador, and Corambis, follow their tangled connection through magic, politics, exile, and the long aftermath of damage.

The Sarah Monette name also covers shorter, quieter kinds of fear. The Bone Key collects linked supernatural mysteries starring Kyle Murchison Booth, a reserved museum archivist who keeps meeting ghosts and old secrets. Somewhere Beneath Those Waves gathers stories that move between horror, myth, fantasy, and science fiction, often with outsiders, grief, and uneasy transformations at the center.

She doesn't stay in one genre lane for long.

Monette has also written three novels with Elizabeth Bear, beginning with A Companion to Wolves. Their Iskryne books take place in a wintry world where warriors form telepathic bonds with huge trellwolves. The books have raids, trolls, and hard choices, but they are equally concerned with pack life, kinship, social rules, and what happens when a necessary way of life unsettles everything around it.

She writes under the name Katherine Addison as well. That name introduced many readers to The Goblin Emperor, the story of Maia, an isolated half-goblin prince who unexpectedly becomes emperor and must learn court politics without losing his basic decency. The novel won the 2015 Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel and was a finalist for the Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy Awards. Addison later returned to that world with Thara Celehar's investigations in The Witness for the Dead, The Grief of Stones, and The Tomb of Dragons.

Across both names, Monette's books tend to make room for work as well as adventure. Her characters investigate, study, govern, heal, bargain, keep records, and keep going after bad things happen. That practical attention gives even the most magical settings a lived-in feel.

She lives near Madison, Wisconsin, with her spouse, cats, and books, and also serves as adjunct faculty in Ashland University's low-residency MFA program.
