Series background & context

Mona Moon enters this series as a woman with brains, nerve, and not much money. She is a cartographer in 1933, broke during the Depression and looking for her next chance, when everything changes in Murder Under a Blue Moon. Overnight, Mona inherits her uncle's fortune and a horse farm in Kentucky. That sudden jump from scraping by to becoming one of the richest women in the country gives the books their first jolt of energy.

But these are not stories about an heiress sitting still and learning to pour tea.

Mona is adventurous by nature, and she keeps moving. She carries a pistol, asks direct questions, and has a habit of walking straight into situations that respectable women are supposed to avoid. Once the series gets going, the books range well beyond Kentucky. Mona heads to England, Washington, the Kentucky Derby, an ocean liner, Montana mining country, and the Mediterranean, all while trying to hold together her business empire and her personal life.

The historical setting is a big part of the fun. These are 1930s mysteries with Depression-era money worries, social expectations, transatlantic travel, and a world that still runs on telegrams, titles, and carefully managed reputations. Keam also threads real figures and real places into the books. That means Mona can move from Bluegrass horse country to lunch at the White House, and somehow the leap still feels natural inside this world.

The recurring cast helps with that sense of continuity. Robert Farley, later Duke of Brynelleth, becomes the central romantic thread. Lady Alice is a close friend and frequent ally. Jetta and Violet help keep Mona's household and travels from falling apart. Even Chloe the poodle adds to the books' sense of style. Around them are miners, aristocrats, servants, politicians, scammers, and social climbers, all of whom make useful suspects.

The tone is brisk and glamorous, but it is not flimsy. Mona has real responsibilities. She runs Moon Enterprises, protects her independence, and keeps discovering that wealth only makes some dangers bigger. There is romance here, but there is also labor trouble, public scandal, blackmail, theft, and murder. The books like good clothes and good parties, yet they also care about power and who gets to wield it.

Mona is the reason it all holds together.

If you want historical mysteries with speed, style, and a heroine who would rather solve the problem herself than wait politely for help, this series delivers exactly that. Start with Murder Under a Blue Moon and keep going in order, because Mona's fortune, friendships, love life, and growing confidence all build from book to book.
