Author bio
Abigail Keam was born and raised in Kentucky, and you can feel that home ground in almost everything she writes. The horse farms, old families, river country, stubborn weather, and sharp local humor that show up in her novels are not borrowed scenery. They are part of her everyday world. She studied Middle Eastern Civilization at the University of Kentucky, then spent years in private business before writing novels for a living.
Bees came first.
Keam kept bees as a hobby, and after a life threatening asthma attack in 1999, she retired and became a full-time beekeeper. She made honey and beeswax products, sold at the Lexington Farmers' Market, and built a second career around work that was physical, seasonal, and very local. That experience did not stay on the farm for long. It became the backbone of her fiction.
She has said she started writing stories in grade school, and one of those early titles was Bobby Bobo Got Baptized At The Big Bone Baptist Church. Later, she dreamed about a beekeeper named Josiah Reynolds who would not leave her alone. Keam started writing the character down, and that dream eventually became Death by a HoneyBee.
That book changed things.
Published in 2010, Death by a HoneyBee introduced readers to Josiah Reynolds, a former art history professor and beekeeper turned amateur sleuth. The follow-up, Death by Drowning, helped confirm that the series had legs, and both early books picked up award attention. Readers who like the Josiah novels usually point to the same pleasures: a mature heroine with bite, Kentucky Bluegrass atmosphere, and mysteries that mix horse country glamour with dirt-under-the-fingernails reality.
Keam did not stop there. She expanded into other corners of storytelling with the Mona Moon mysteries, which start with Murder Under a Blue Moon and follow a cartographer who inherits a fortune in the middle of the Depression. Those books lean into 1930s style, travel, wealth, danger, and real historical figures. She also wrote the Key Largo-set romance series that begins with Last Chance Motel, and the fantasy saga that opens with Wall of Doom.
Across genres, her interests stay pretty steady. She likes capable women, hidden histories, social worlds with strict rules, and places that matter as much as the people do. She also likes the meeting point between elegance and trouble. In one series that means bourbon, bees, and murder. In another it means White House lunches, ocean liners, and missing jewels.
Outside fiction, Keam is an award-winning beekeeper who has won sixteen honey awards at the Kentucky State Fair, including the Barbara Horn Award for a perfect score in competition. She has also studied beekeeping abroad, including a trip to South Africa. That practical knowledge gives her books a lived-in feel. Even when the plots go glamorous or strange, the details tend to come from work, research, and real places.
She still lives on the Kentucky River with her husband and various animals, in the metal house that turns up in so many author bios because it is too memorable to leave out.
That feels right for her books too. They are grounded, a little offbeat, and very sure of where they come from.
