Author bio

Molly Fitz is the cozy mystery pen name of Melissa Storm, a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author who likes her mysteries funny, pet-packed, and a little bit strange. Under this name she writes the kind of books where a talking cat, a haunted manor, or an accidental witch can all feel perfectly normal by chapter two.

Books and animals were her first companions when she was growing up. She has written that both were her best friends as a child, and that mix still explains a lot about the worlds she builds now.

Storm has also been candid about how she first approached publishing. Early on, she chose a pen name because she did not feel ready to put her real name at the center of her work. Over time, that changed. In personal essays she has talked about how marriage, motherhood, a complicated pregnancy, and a major rethink of what she wanted to write all pushed her toward stories that felt warmer, cleaner, and more hopeful.

She has never only been on one side of the book business, either. Along with writing fiction, she built a publicity business for authors and later worked in publishing and marketing. That practical experience shows up in her fiction in a good way. The books are breezy, but they are also neatly built, with clear hooks, strong series momentum, and a good feel for what keeps readers coming back.

And yes, the pet obsession is real.

Her official Molly Fitz pages talk about life in Alaska with her child and a lively mix of dogs and cats. One rescue cat was named Merlin the Magical Fluff by her child, which tells you exactly how thin the wall can be between her real life and her fiction. Even when the books head into witchcraft, ghosts, or magical law enforcement, they usually stay anchored in the everyday love people have for their animals.

She also writes under her own name as Melissa Storm, where the focus shifts more toward romance, women's fiction, and uplifting stories. That split seems to free her up. Molly Fitz books can be louder, sillier, and more openly built around paranormal hooks, while still carrying the same interest in comfort, connection, and second chances.

That blend is easy to see across the catalog. Kitty Confidential introduces Angie Russo and the gloriously overconfident Octo-Cat, who turns a near-death accident into a whole detective career. Witch for Hire leans into magical small-town chaos and a very pushy black cat boss. Merlin the Magical Fluff gives readers a witch cat and a baffled barista. Moonlight and Mischief, written with Trixie Silvertale, shifts into haunted-manor territory. My Colorful Conundrum adds animated artwork to the mix.

Comfort matters here.

Across the Molly Fitz books, certain patterns keep showing up. Small towns. Fresh starts. Women who did not plan to become sleuths. Cats who talk too much, judge too hard, or know more than they should. Readers come for the cozy setup and stay for the voice. The mysteries move, the fantasy never gets bogged down, and the animals are never just decoration. In a Molly Fitz story, the pet sidekick might be the comic relief, the emotional center, and the best witness in town, all at once.
