Author bio

Molly MacRae was born in Elgin, Illinois, and grew up in Barrington, back when it still felt like a small town. That early sense of close community stayed with her, and it runs through almost everything she writes.

She has said some of her first mystery stories were written in high school French class.

Before novels took over, MacRae spent years in jobs that would later feed her fiction. She lived for about twenty years in the foothills of Tennessee's Blue Ridge Mountains, where she served as director of the history museum in Jonesborough, Tennessee's oldest town, and later managed an independent bookstore in Johnson City. Those are practical mystery-writer jobs, full of local history, odd objects, strong personalities, and people who know everybody else's business.

Her short stories began appearing in Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine in 1990, and they kept appearing there for more than twenty years. She also won the Sherwood Anderson Award for Short Fiction for More or Less. That background shows in her pacing. She knows how to set a scene quickly and how to let a clue do real work.

Her first novel, Wilder Rumors, puts a museum curator under suspicion in a Tennessee town, and Lawn Order brings her back to bookstore territory with Margaret Welch and her impossible sister, Bitsy. The Margaret and Bitsy stories collected in My Troubles show another side of her work, funny, regional, and sharp about family life. Even early on, MacRae was drawn to ordinary places where trouble can spread fast.

Then she found a very comfortable home in the cozy mystery.

In the Haunted Yarn Shop books, beginning with Last Wool and Testament, Kath Rutledge inherits a Tennessee fiber shop, a lively needlework group, and a gloomy ghost named Geneva. The series lets MacRae combine craft knowledge, small-town life, and paranormal mischief without losing the mystery at the center. Readers who like texture, local history, and a touch of the uncanny usually settle in quickly.

The Highland Bookshop books, starting with Plaid and Plagiarism, move the action to Scotland, where four women try to build a new life around Yon Bonnie Books. Those novels keep the murders coming, but they also make room for friendship, second chances, rare books, village politics, and the pleasures of tea, scones, and gossip. They feel like travel, business trouble, and amateur sleuthing all rolled into one.

More recently, Come Shell or High Water opened her Haunted Shell Shop series on Ocracoke Island in North Carolina, a setting inspired by family trips to the Outer Banks. There, MacRae adds maritime history, folklore, shell collecting, and a pirate ghost named Emrys Lloyd to the mix. She lives in Champaign, Illinois, with her family, and she has also worked in public libraries, helping connect children with books. That mix of museum person, bookseller, librarian, and mystery writer helps explain why her novels feel so rooted in place. The crimes matter, but so do the shelves, the stories, and the communities gathered around them.
