Magic in the Mix
by Annie Barrows
2014
Now officially twins, Miri and Molly Gill still remember the separate lives they led before magic rewrote their family. When new portals open in their old house, the girls are swept back to 1918 and the Civil War, where saving relatives means risking the future they love.
The Magic Half
by Annie Barrows
2007
Middle child Miri feels invisible between two sets of twins in her noisy family. After a shimmering bit of glass sends her back to 1935, she meets Molly, a mistreated girl who could have been her twin, and must find a way to change both their lives.
Series background & context
The Miri and Molly books blend family drama, time travel, and American history into a two volume arc. They begin with Miri Gill, the only non twin in a house that holds older twin brothers, younger twin sisters, and parents who are busy keeping everyone fed and clothed.
In The Magic Half the family moves into an old farmhouse, and Miri is feeling particularly invisible when she discovers a strange glass lens taped to her bedroom wall. Looking through it pulls her back to 1935, into the same room, where she meets Molly, an orphaned girl living with cruel relatives and dreaming of escape.
Miri realizes that helping Molly means more than just one quick rescue. The story uses its twisting time loops to ask what it would look like to set things right for both girls, and what might happen if Molly could join Miri’s family in the present day rather than being left behind.
The sequel, Magic in the Mix, picks up after that wish has been granted. Now Miri and Molly are officially twins in the eyes of everyone around them, yet both still carry memories of the years when their lives ran in separate directions. Their house is not done with them either; unexpected portals tug the girls further back in time.
Home repairs open the way to 1918 and then to the Civil War, where Miri and Molly must think fast to keep their twin brothers safe and to untangle the history of Molly’s birth family. Battles, soldiers, and a war time farm are all seen through the eyes of children who know that their choices could alter the future they have come to love.
Despite the big historical backdrop, the tone stays grounded in sibling squabbles, shared jokes, and the constant push and pull of a large family. Magic here is less about flashy spells and more about the idea that time itself can be nudged toward fairness if the right people are brave enough to act.
This page walks you through the Miri and Molly books in order, explains how the two stories fit together, and gives you a sense of whether to start with the lighter mystery of the first book or dive straight into the higher stakes adventures of the second.
